Everyone has “Mondays”. Everyone will have days where we feel like hamsters on a wheel. This usually happens because we have poor time management skills. Fortunately, this does not need to be a permanent issue. We are all capable of changing our time management habits. You just have to be willing to work hard to adjust your behavior. Different time management methods do exist. What works for one person might not work for you, so you’ll have to try a few things before you find the habits that work best. Try these tips to get you started.
First, try to discern what you are doing right now with your time. You should take a few days before you change anything. Simply jot down a list of the things you are doing, even when procrastination is involved. Even if you spend two hours perusing the newspaper, jot it down. Map out your whole week. This will show you where you are starting and how you are most likely to waste time. From here you can figure out what you need to change and how best to change it.
Have a schedule for your month, week and day. If you have an eight hour work day, plan that out to include things like “returning e-mail” time and “weekly conference call” and even “take a break!” It will be easier to get into good time habits if your days are well structured. You can train yourself to be productive during certain times of the day. It just takes diligence. Follow your schedule for a month and you might find that you have it committed to memory and that it has become second nature!
Make sure to plan in breaks and times for relaxation. It will be easy to become burnt out fast if you try going full throttle all day without breaks. You need to let your mind and body just sit and relax every day at least for a few minutes to stay on the top of your game. So be sure you schedule a few brain breaks each day and then be sure to actually take them. That is your time! Your brain needs it. Your body needs it. Your emotional health depends on these breaks. Never believe anyone who says these breaks aren’t necessary.
Learning time management might seem a bit overwhelming at first. The more you work at it, however, the easier it gets to stay focused and on task. The person you’ve always envied for time management skills might soon be asking YOU for help with their schedule. Goals are a good thing to have. Just keep it simple. Leave time for fun in your life. Don’t forget to relax sometimes!
