What is this sports car? A $260,000 Porsche 911, using 516lb ft and 611bhp. The Porsche GT2 RS the quickest 911 ever to leave the manufacturing facility. Its only goal seems to be getting every Porsche tuner out of business. How about the technical specifications? The engine is identical to the 997 GT2 (which is no longer built), but runs distinct turbo chargers, new intercoolers, brand new cylinders and also a new engine management system to operate 1.6 bar of boost, over the last vehicles 1.4 bar. Stated performance is of the what-the-hell variety with 0-62mph in 3.5sec, 0-100mph in 6.8 seconds and a Ring lap of 7 minutes 18 seconds.
The chassis is generally a bit up-rated Gt3 RS, and that is a pretty strong foundation. You will find a number of modifications to fit this turbo application and also for even better reaction the rear axle has much more solid linkages than the Porsche GT3 RS. Aerodynamically, it is quite similar to the 997 GT2, but runs a brand new splitter, brand new rear diffuser and an extra gurney on the back wing. Does not sound like much, but it practically has as much downforce as the Porsche GT3 RS.
What is it like to drive this Porsche GT2? Comedy quick. We jumped out of a brand new Porsche Cayman S into this thing and, at very first, asked ourselves just what the fuss ws really all about. Being turbocharged, it doesn’t make much noise and it’s so easy to drive at reduced speed, rides so well, that you treat it just like any standard 911. The fixed buckets are similar to the Porsche GT3 RS’s, the dash is plain 911, there is far less induction sound than you get in the normally aspirated automobiles. It is actually all a little disappointing until you open up the tap in 3rd and the vehicle drags the horizon onto your fore head.
There’s no PDK option, only a robust, short throw manual transmission. The clock would have anyone imagine that a Porsche Turbo S is faster to 62 and also as fast to 100mph, however, as ever, the time clock lies. This car is different-world quick to the Porsche Turbo S. And obviously it’s a real challenge for the driver. No other turbo-charged Porsche 911 comes near to offering the chassis stability that this automobile does.
You turn, it really grips, the engine lunges, the axle grips more, then the outrageous traction takes over on the exit of turns. Also, the steering is spectacular. Drive it quick, use its possibilities for a handful of minutes and you have to back away before the figures get silly. The traction force and stability management calibration is a masterstroke: you can employ a lot of the performance, so much of the time. It is freakishly comfortable too. From time to time a small speed bump elicits a creak from these rear rose joints, otherwise it rides no more harshly than a Carrera on sports suspension.
How does it compare? It is faster, a lot more useable and far less expensive than a Ferrari 599 GTO. However then it doesn’t feel as exclusive, isn’t lathered in as much carbon and is nearly mute in contrast to the very musical Fandango. Neither the Lamborghini LP670 SV or Bentley Continental GT are as fast or as able. But once more they really both trounce the Porsche GT2 RS for pure drama.
