Some insight into the world of parenting is offered in the following article.
There are just as many parenting styles as there are a number of parents. Experts believe the parenting styles fall into 4 different and identifiable styles: authoritarian, indulgent, authoritative, and uninvolved.
We can try to examine this more closely. The authoritarian parent is considered as the first parenting style. When it comes to these parents, they are like army commanders. Issuing commands and orders to their children and fully expecting their children to carry out their orders without questioning them is what these parents prefer to do. Authoritarians do not welcome nor appreciate any feedback from their children. What they do is live by set and defined rules in a structured environment. These children as we now know, are generally considered to have an unhappy nature about them. Boys generally exhibit hostile behaviour when dealing with frustration, whereas girls tend to give up easily when faced with difficult situations. However, due to their disciplined upbringing, both the boys and the girls tend to perform better in school.
The second parenting style is the indulgent parent. Generally, these parents are lenient. They allow a variety of behaviours by their children that some would describe as immature. What they essentially do is let the children look after themselves and avoid confronting them at all costs. Indulgent parents may also be described as non-directive or democratic. Non-directive parents virtually take no action in the parenting of their children and they are also known to parent by default. But for democratic parents, even if they are lenient, they are more aware and show a commitment to engage with their parents.
The authoritative parent is the third parenting style we can consider. These parents are both demanding and responsive at the same time. Authoritative parents while expecting their their children to behave in a certain manner, don’t impose their authority and welcome a certain amount of questioning. A combination of assertiveness coupled with the ability to respond to their children’s feedback is what they demonstrate. Being more lively and having a happier disposition about them is how these children appear to be. They seem to be more sure of their abilities and their self-confidence is also more developed. Not to mention these children are also more adept in their social skills and show better emotional control. Because they tend to be more open minded in their outlook towards their children’s behavior, such as boys playing with dolls and girls playing with tools, gender stereotypes are also less of an issue with authoritative parents.
Finally, uninvolved parenting is the parenting style that we should also look at. These parents, as the name suggests, are simply uninvolved. They are not interested in any feedback from their children and they are neither demanding nor responsive of them. These are the parents who would more often neglect their children and they are also likely to be irresponsible.
